It wasn’t until 1972 that people in the United States under the age of 21 were given the right to vote in national elections. The 18 to 21 year old population has the potential to make quite a significant impact on the overall vote. However, in 1972 when this group was finally given the right to vote, they ended up turning out a lower voter rate than the rest of the electorate groups.

Even today this age group is targeted in an attempt to get more people out to actually vote. Young people often do not think about how important their voice really is in elections and how truly short the time period has been that they have even had the option to vote.
