Contour bunding is usually done in order to improve the farming ability of the soil. This is usually done when the land is hilly and sloping. This will make farming a bit more difficult. By doing contour bunding, some stair-like areas will be developed. Planting different plants, herbs, and crops will be easier to do.

Some examples of contour bunding cans are found in various parts of the world. The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines is one example. The native Igorots have done this type of planting in order to plant rice with ease. Take note that rice terraces can also be found in other parts of the world.

Contour bundingis a proven sustainable land management practice for marginal, sloping, and hilly land where the soil productivity is very low. It is widely adopted by the ethnic minorities of Nepal who practice the shifting cultivation system of farming.
