In Greek mythology, Minos, like his two brothers, had, after death, the task of judging incomers to the underworld based on their merits, how they had operated in life. Minos was one of the three sons - Minos, Sarpedon, and Rhadamanthus - from the union of Europa and Zeus, when Zeus was in the form of a bull.

The brothers had to judge where in the underworld an individual would be placed when he entered it. His mertiable life, or otherwise, would be duly assessed before he was relegated to the appropriate area. This idea would have been powerful in persuading ordinary Greeks to live a purer life!
