Technically, the answer is B because Billy Jo’s mother died while she is giving birth. The birth may not have been very crucial if only her mother did not get burned badly a few days before she gave birth. It was a tragic story as it could have been prevented if the characters were more careful of their actions. Before the mother gave birth, she was already unrecognizable because of her burns.

Even Billy Jo had really bad hands because they were also burned when she was trying to save her mother. The father became depressed because of the whole situation and started drinking with the use of the funds supposedly for Billy Jo’s education.
