The function of an internet service provider is to provide internet service to those who need Internet service. Internet service providers may offer dial-up or broadband service to consumers. The most common method is through telephone lines. Dial-up connections require the use of a phone line and usually connections of 56 kbs or less.

Broadband connections can be either ISDN, broadband wireless access, cable modem, DSL, satellite or Ethernet. Broadband varies in speed between 64kband 20 +mb per second. All ISP's have their own servers, and the users are connected to those servers.
