What is the difference between Gonal F and Follistim?

When it comes to reproducing, some women have a harder time than others to be able to get pregnant. When it comes to issues with fertility, there are two common drugs that women can take. They are Gonal F and Follistim. Both help promote the production of eggs.

This is done through hormone therapy, which is artificial. While they are both for the same reason, they differ in how they are available. Gonal F can come in vial, liquid, or powder form. Follistim comes in different vials. As far as the vial versions, they can both can in vial form that is pre-mixed.

Gonal F and Follistim are known to be two drugs that will be recommended to women who would like to become more fertile. The main goal of these medications is to promote egg production through the use of artificial hormone therapy.

One difference is how these two medications will be available. When you say Gonal F, this will come in multi-vial ampoules. Follistim will come in different vials. Gonal F is also available in powder form or in liquid form.

There are also some that come in a pre-mixed vial that can be injected. Take note that if you do get the pre-mixed vial, you would need to store it at room temperature for up to 28 days.

Follistim and Gonal-f belong to the same drug class, which is Gonadotropins; they are used to treat infertility in women, and stimulate the development of multiple eggs. Men can use Follistim.

There is no much difference between these two drugs. They have similar side effects: headache, nausea, stomach, pelvic pain, breast swelling, stuffy nose, skin rash, sore throat numbness, injection site reaction, and others.

However, dizziness is a side effect for Follistim only. Vomiting, swelling of ankles, unusual bleeding from the vagina, pain, redness or swelling of the calf muscles, and others are side effects for Gonal-f only.

It is recommended to start a Gonal drug with 30mg once daily after several days the dosage can be increased to 120mg while it is advisable to start Follistim with 150 to 225 IU for the first four days.
