Shallots and leeks are both parts of the onion family. Shallots are bulbs and have a firm texture; are purple in color, sweet, aromatic, and mild. Leeks have the appearance of thick green onions with broad, flat leaves. Shallots have a similar flavor as garlic and onions.

Leeks have an even milder taste, which is comparable to green onions. Shallots are consumed fresh, chopped, boiled, and cooked. It is popularly cooked lightly in butter and sautéed. Leeks, on the other hand, are very mild and work better for slow cooking soups and stews. They can also be sautéed or grilled. Many of the more memorable dishes made out of these foods are popular in France, Indonesia, and Thailand.
