Both of these drugs are in the benzodiazepine family. Both of them increase the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain. Xanax has been used as a sedative, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant attributes. This drug became available in 1969 to treat panic disorder, which at the time, there was little research concerning how to handle it. If this drug is consumed for an extended time, it can cause dependence. Xanax treats panic disorder, anxiety, and insomnia.

On the other hand, lorazepam became available in 1977 for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and panic disorder. This drug has sedative, hypnotic, and amnesia properties. It may also be used to sedate hospitalized and antagonistic patients. Lorazepam is also known to treat vertigo, dizziness, and chemotherapy. The major distinction between the two is that Xanax hits harder than lorazepam.
