What is the difference between Pink eye And Stye?

A stye is inflammation of the lower or upper part of the eyelid that shows as pimple or abscess. The inflammation is due to the obstruction of an oil duct along with microorganisms such as bacteria, which is on the surface of the eyelids.

The microorganisms and dead cells of the skin are deposited along the eyelid. Styes are actually harmless, and they do not affect eyesight but may result in some errors of refraction. Pink eye, also known as “conjunctivitis,” refers to the redness and the swelling in the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is the mucous layer that lines the eyelid and also the eye surface.

Pink eye is usually caused by an infection, and the irritation which results from infection leads to the redness and swelling in the conjunctiva. It is a contagious disease (since it is caused by viruses or bacteria); however, it goes away in 7 to 10 days.

It can be confusing to know the difference between a stye and a pink eye in the beginning, but a stye is usually characterized by a hard lump that can be found in the eyelids. This is normally small enough, but it would still be a bit painful. The pink eye will not cause any lumps to form, but the inside area of the eye will be pink to red, depending on the severity of the condition.

There are some people who will only have a mild pink eye, and it will not even be noticeable. Yet, there are also some people who will have really red eyes, and they will have no choice but to try to rest their eyes. Take note that the pink eye is contagious while the stye is not.
