LCD stands for liquid crystal display, while HDTV stands for high definition television. LCD’s developed separately from HDTV and accomplished mainstream acceptance long before HDTV technology did. LCD’s obtained a reputation for its handheld devices and mobile phones, where CRT is not an alternative.

The development of colored and larger LCD screens made it a replacement for CRT monitors and computers. In tv’s the application of LCDs was impeded significantly due to technological restrictions such as the size and inherent defects. LCDs tend to be small or expensive because of the high cost of manufacturing the screens on them.

It was also thwarted by dead or stuck pixels, which is a typical problem for LCDs. As more and more technology came to fruition, costs went down, and LCD appeared to be a reliable option for television applications.
