Where and were have similar spelling and sound, which can confuse many people studying the English language. However, once we dig deeper into their meaning, we can identify the differences between the two words. Where is an adverb? It pertains to time and location.

It is one of the 5 question words that begin with W. An example of using this word is, "Where did you all go last night?" Were is a past tense verb, used to describe an action that happened in the past. For example, "The mom told the dad that the children were good in school yesterday."
