A jacket tends to be shorter while a coat tends to be longer.

A Jacket is a basic covering, usually for the top half of the human body. The jacket usually has more to do with appearance than it does with utility.

A coat, on the other hand, has a more utilitarian idea and generally covers more.

Jackets and coats are considered to be outerwear, but they are not the same. Coats are considered to be warmer as compared to jackets since they may have some lining that will allow the user of the jacket to stay warm. A coat is usually hip-length or waist-length, so that it will look more formal as compared to the jacket. A jacket can be made out of different materials.

There are some jackets that are made out of leather. Some are made out of denim, and some may be made out of thin types of cloth. A jacket may also keep you warm, but most of them have been designed in order to improve your overall style.
