The significant difference is that the DVD is formatted to retain more information. A cd usually has a volume of 650 megabytes, while the smallest capacity DVD can store about seven times more information or 4.38 gigabytes. These are different kinds of DVD’s, but the DVD ROM refers to a read-only disc or a disk that cannot be written over. Dual-layer and double-sized DVDs boost this to a maximum of 17GB. This increase is the main reason why CD ROM was surpassed by DVD. Another advantage of DVD is much faster data transfer speeds. The CD ROM base speed of 1x translates to a data throughput of 1.28 Mbit. With typical CD ROM drives attaining speeds of around 69.8 Mbits. Also, the rate of DVD’s is much faster. DVD has the advantage over CD ROM in the area of watching movies. On a DVD, there are deleted scenes, interviews, and outtakes.
