What is the difference between Autism and Down Syndrome?

Autism and Down syndrome are different health conditions. They have different symptoms, manifestations, treatments, and medication. Autism is a neurobehavioral condition, which includes problems in speech, communication, non-verbal and verbal communication, interacting, social, and motor skill.

Down syndrome is also referred to as trisomy 2. It is a genetic disorder that is caused by the third copy of chromosome 21. Some people live with Down syndrome and autism all their lives. Down syndrome is a result of a delay in growth, poor muscle tone, and a lower IQ.

Autism’s effects include weakened social cognitive and interaction, the restricted focus of interests and sensitive power of sensation; some people also suffer a delay in cognitive development, while the effect of the down syndrome includes upward slant eyes, delay in physical growth, delayed speech, learning disability, delayed crawling and walking, short stature and others. There are 3 types of Autism which are Autistic disorder, Pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger syndrome.

Autism is a pervasive neurological disorder that is noticeable in early childhood and extends throughout the lifespan, characterized by language development, atypical communication, eye contact, and sensory experiences. This lifelong developmental condition is also known as an autism spectrum disorder.

Down syndrome, on the other hand, is a medical condition that makes a patient share a certain resemblance to the Mongoloid race. According to researches, down syndrome is caused by a chromosomal excess, which in turn causes a delay in the cognitive function and ability of the patient, certain characteristic facial features, small stature, etc.

The common types of autism are Asperger Syndrome, classic autism, atypical autism. The common types of down syndrome are Mosaic Down syndrome, Trisomy 21, Robertsonian translocation. While there's no known cause of autism, down syndrome is caused by a chromosomal excess, usually a product of abnormal cell division.
