Peter Handke has 186 books on Goodreads. Hanke's most popular book is a 1972 semi-autobiographical novel, called "A sorrow beyond dreams," which is based on the life of Handke’s mother. She lived during the Nazi era, the war, and the postwar consumer economy. His mother sacrificed herself by overdosing on sleeping pills. "Short letter, long farewell" is a 1972 novel as well.

It recounts the story of a young Austrian writer who travels across the United States in search of his wife. "A moment of true feeling" is a book written in 1975, that chronicles a character's quest for freedom from what he calls "Dreadful normalcy." Part of his journey is throughout Paris. "Repetition" is a 1986 novel. It tells the tale of an Austrian of diverse German and Slovenian heritage, who goes to communist Yugoslavia in pursuit of identity.
