Many of us do not know the difference between the words “among” and “between”. We use these words interchangeably and this should not be the case. Among is used when you are referring to more than two parties. It is used to introduce undefined or collective relationship. The word has its origin in an old English word called “mong”.

This word is used to describe a crowd. An example of the word in a sentence: Mary shared the oranges among the children. However, is used when you are referring to two parties. It is used to introduce two entities. The word between has its origin from an Indo-European root which means “two”. Example of the word in a sentence: The final football match is between Chelsea and Liverpool. Hope you find this information helpful.

Between is a word that is used when you are trying to show the difference between two distinct items. For example, you may say that there is a difference between a knife and a spork. You will use among when you are trying to show that there are some items that are considered to be a part of the group. For example, “The Hardy family is among the missing people in the town of Newlands after the devastating storm.”

This just shows that the subject is among a great number of people who have gotten lost during the storm. Take note that among is commonly used to refer to three or more objects that are part of the group.

Two of the most confusing English words are among and between in terms of using them in sentences. Even some people who use English as their first language find these confusing at times. To enlighten you of their difference, let us study the words one by one. Between is usually used between two people, groups, or items. Examples are:

Between Math and Science, which one do you prefer better? I cannot choose who to bring in the concert between my cousin and sister. On the other hand, among is used to indicate that something or someone left out of a group or is part of the group. Examples would be: She was so very excited to find a friend among strangers. The superstar’s comment made a commotion among her fans.
