It is very easy to think that the word congressman is a term for any member of the US Congress, which includes both the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This is definitely not true. The congressman is a term for a member of the US House of Representatives. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives are the legislative arm of the US government. Senate is also known as the upper chamber, while the House of Representatives is known as the lower chamber. Although both chambers constitute the legislative arm of government, there are some differences between them.

The total number of senators in the Senate is 100, while there are 435 members who are duly elected in the house of representatives. A senator uses 6 years for a single term, and he can be reelected after the expiration of his first term. Congressmen use two years for a single term, and they can be reelected for another two years. You are eligible to contest for a senatorial position only if you are a US citizen for at least nine years, and you must be over 30 years of age. Someone contesting for a position in the House of Representatives must be over 25 years and must be a US citizen for at least seven years.

The House of Representatives and Senators are part of the United States Congress. Both chambers of Congress are involved in the legislative process. Senators have more significant power and influence on the government and the president. Prior approval of any bill is reviewed by the House and then sent to the Senate. It is up to the Senate whether to approve or veto a bill.

Senators also assist the president in foreign policy matters, international treaties, peace agreements, initiation of wars, intervention in foreign conflicts, and the appointment of federal judges. Representatives are elected for two -year terms, and Senators are elected for six-year terms. Also, to be eligible for appointment as a representative in the House, he or she must be 25 years old and a United States citizen for seven years. Senators and Congressmen are public officials who help the country’s leaders in creating and enforcing laws. They are often confused for one another, so here are some of their big differences. In most countries, senators serve in the Senate for six years while Congressmen are part of the House of Representatives for two years (some countries three years).

In the U.S.A., each state has to vote for two senators to be part of the Senate, but for the number of Congressmen? Congresswomen, it would depend on the population of the states (e.g., There are 53 representatives in California as it is a densely populated state compared to Wyoming, which only has one representative).

The senator is someone who is meant to represent a whole state or a whole country depending on the type of government that the country has. The senator is considered to be a higher position in politics but there are instances when the congressman is considered to be more important especially since they also have to decide on certain things that are supposed to improve the country that they are in or at least, the district, or place that they are representing.

Both positions are needed to ensure that legislation will take place. The congressman may pitch some new laws and the senators will also check out these laws and may vote on them or submit the laws so that they can be processed even further.
