Being a makeup artist does not require any formal education. But it takes some years of formal education to be able to work as a cosmetologist. As a matter of fact, a person that studied cosmetology has the license to be a cosmetologist. A makeup artist is usually trained, and they are only involved in facial makeup alone. Cosmetologists, on the other hand, are learned people, and they are involved in the doing of hair, nails, and skin. Makeup artists do not get involved, and they'll not be able to deliver when it comes to hairstyling and nail care.

A makeup artist can get himself or herself involved in studying a course, but it will not grant any license but just a certificate to show the validity of the course. However, they would not be able to counsel you on issues such as skin care, hair, or nails. Makeup artists generally do not undertake hair styling as well.

Cosmetologists have more experience with the treatment, therapies, and best practices correlated to the skin, nails, and hair care. There are also courses for makeup artists, but these are more focused on practical knowledge of beauty. Cosmetology courses are very intense, and a license is needed to practice the craft.
