The winter ball is not only a dance gathering or a social event. A ball may be seen as a philanthropic activity with formal gratitude and appreciation of a group's work and significant contributions to society. It is generally attended by adult's for particular causes or given to honor and highlight specific organizations. It may also be seen as hoity-toity and upper class, as they are typically held at high-class hotels or ballrooms.
Winter formal is a severe and mature dance occasion. It usually involves music that appeals more to couples than it does for single people looking to hang out and dance. The winter formal is generally the first experience of high school students in a proper formal setting. It is typically held at a high school gym.

It can be very confusing for some people to know the difference between a winter ball and a winter formal. A winter ball is known to be a type of event that does not necessarily have to be school-related. It can be held in the country club or more adults will participate in this as compared to students but people are still expected to dress formally and look their best.
The winter formal is known to be a type of event that usually happens in the school. This is usually for juniors who would like to dress up and spend time with their friends and loved ones. Even though this is an event for juniors, seniors and lower year levels can still participate too.
