Ascending and Descending are antonyms. This shows that whatever meaning you have for ascending; the opposite will be descending. These two words are used mostly in mathematics or any subject area that deals with measurement and classification. Whenever ascending is used, it means different items are to be classified or arranged based on their size, such that they are arranged as they increase in size. For example, counting from 1-100 is in ascending order, i.e., you are starting from the least to the highest.

Whenever the word Descending is used, it means you are to arrange items as they decrease in size or amount. For example, counting from 100- 1 is in descending order. Ascending is a verb which means to move upward, to soar. While descending is the exact opposite of ascending, i.e., to move downward. Ascending is used in many professions to show the upward movement of an object while descending describes the downward movement of an object.

Ascending and descending are two words that are taught in elementary math classes to students. These happen to be the most basic math concepts that are shown to students. Ascending is a word which refers to the act of climbing up and descending denotes the act of coming down or sliding down a flight of stairs or a mountain peak.

If you have a list of numbers that you are organizing in ascending order, you will begin with the smallest number and end with the largest number. Ascending, in this instance, implies increasing order, and the next number in the series is always more significant than its predecessor. To ascend means to go up higher and to descend is to go down or climb down.

As you drive a car up a hill, you are ascending up the hill. If you go down the hill, then you are descending. Therefore, the difference between something ascending and descending are the opposite of each other. They both move in a certain direction which describes their similarities. However, the things would be moving in an opposite direction.

Some people find it more difficult to ascend as if they are running uphill. Running downhill always seems easy. Numbers also ascend because if you have a list of numbers that increase in amounts, then they are considered to be ascending. If the numbers are getting lower and lower in the line of numbers, then those numbers are considered to be descending.
