The idea of friendship day celebration can be credited to Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmarks cards in the year 1930. August 2 was initially proposed to be the friendship day celebration, and people had been encouraged to celebrate their friends by sending gifts and greeting cards to them. However, Joyce Hall's idea was supported by the United States Congress who deliberated on the idea in 1935.

The actual reason behind the celebration of friendship day might not be totally ascertained but might probably be; as a result of the devastating effect the First World War brought on people. In 1958, the World Friendship Crusade declared Friendship Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year. And since then a lot of countries have emulated the idea and today, friendship day is being celebrated in various countries of the world. Friendship day is necessary because it gives you more opportunity to appreciate your friends

It started because the founder wanted to sell more greeting cards. Joyce Hall thought of this idea in the early 1900s.

She wanted it to be a day for friends to celebrate friends. Then the friends would buy cards for their friends to celebrate this day. It should not come as a surprise that Joyce Hall was the founder of Hallmark, the popular card store. At first, it did not go over well since people realized the purpose of the creation of this day was for Hallmark to make more money.
