Linux is an independent project reengineered Unix internals, programs, and networking.
Freebsd is essentially a Unix direct derivative.
Both of them work precisely similar most of the time, but Linux has an edge in desktop computing and of course, sever side computing.
Freebsd is also chosen is for the PlayStation 4 gaming console.

Linux and BSD are commonly heard when discussing operating systems. The licenses for Linux and BSD are different. Linux uses GPL licensing and BSD's license is not as restrictive as the license for Linux. Linux is more controlled than BSD. There is a difference between the BSD and the Linux project in regards to how much of the operating systems are used by each one. Linux does not use the operating system as a whole but the kernel only.
The BSD uses all of the operating systems. BSD is easier to upgrade than Linux. If you want to upgrade Linux, then you will have to use the package that comes with the system. However, if you're going to upgrade BSD, it is quite simple by just pushing one button.
