Why were the American carriers not destroyed at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941?

As John said, the Aircraft carriers were out to sea during the attack on Pearl harbor.
They were however responsible for a decisive victory at the Battle of Midway against the Japanese naval fleet responsible for the attack on Pearl.
