What is the difference between Assume and Presume?

A lot of people think to assume and presume the same, and they have the same meaning. However, this is not the case. The word “assume” is a verb which means “to suppose” something based on little evidence. For example, “I assume you will not come to my party.” Assume can also mean to assume responsibility.

For instance, “Mrs. Kate assumed the position of Permanent sectary at the state secretariat.” Presume means to suppose something based on probability. This means to believe something to be true or false because it is likely to happen. For instance, “I presume you are Mr. Johnson.”

To assume means that you are assuming that something is going to happen. You feel that you are going to assume the role of a president. This means that you are going to serve as the president of your class, for example. When you presume, this means that there is a big possibility that you will be doing something so it is possible that you presume that you are going to take the role of a president soon.

This means that it is likely but you are not 100% sure that this is going to occur. Sometimes, people assume that something is going to happen but they do not have any evidence. Those who presume usually base what will happen next on the circumstances.
