The main difference between the two has to be its viscosity. It is evident from the numbers that 5W40 comes with a higher viscosity as compared to 5W30. They are both five grade when they are not placed in certain temperatures. Between the two, the 5W30 is considered to be better when used in vehicles because it will not hinder the flow of the fluid.

Also, 30 weight is used in temperature ranges from -25°C or -13°F and 25°C or 77°F, while the 40 weight ranges from -25°C or -13°F and 35°C or 95°F.
