A lot of people may get confused with the usage of then and than. This is understandable because they may seem similar to each other. Than is the word that you will use when you want to compare two different things. For example, you may say, “Laurie is thinner than Ellie.”

Then is a word that you will use when you want to refer to a certain time. For example, you may say, “There were fewer motorcycles back then.” The sentence means that before, there aren’t as many motorcycles as there is right now. Basically, if you would like to do comparisons, than is the better word to use.
