There are certain characteristics that make children and babies with Down Syndrome look different than other babies without Down Syndrome. They may have a mental impairment as well as stunted growth. Also, they may have more skin on the back of their neck. They may have a narrow roof of the mouth and a flatter head. Their tongue may be larger and a flatter nose.

Some have slanted eyes and a shorter neck. Their tongue may protrude. Their fifth fingertip may be bent. Now, not all of the babies and children will have these qualities, but they have a greater likelihood of having these qualities than those babies without Down Syndrome. They may also have low muscle tone and outer ears.
