What is the flow rate for manually regulated IV using the drops per minute? Ordered: 1000 mL NS over 24 hours, tubing is 20 gtt/mL.

14! With a simple ratio and proportion!


a)1000ml/1440 min =XML/60min

1440/1440 = 60000/1440

x = 42 ml/hour

b) 42ml/60 min = XML/ 1 min

60/60 = 42/60

x=0.7 ml/min

c). 0.7ml/1 min = XML/20 gtt

x= 14 gtt/ min

Yup. 1000(ml) x 20(gtts) = 20,000 ÷ 24 = 833.333 ÷ 60 = 13.8888889 OR 14 gtts/min

1000/1440 x 20
