Why did Reagen support Human Rights violator Montt?

Efrain Rios Montt was the president of Guatemala from 1982 to 1983. He was accused of crimes against humanity and for being a violator of Human Rights. After he was overthrown, Montt was succeeded by Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores. Later, he would become the President of the Congress of Guatemala from January 14, 2000 to January 14, 2004.

However, not everyone believed this about his problems with humanity. One of these people was Ronald Reagan. One reason he didn’t believe that Montt was terrible was because he believed that conditions had improved in Guatemala. Some of these things included mass murders, rapes and tortures. These were against his own citizens in Guatemala. During this time, Guatemala was in the middle of a long civil war.
