Oceans are polluted in a number of ways. One is by the factories that continue to dump their toxins into the water which flows to the ocean. This pollutes the water that our fish and seafood sources live in which in turn, poisons us. Another major source of pollution is plastic. Plastic doesn't break down and is forever a pollution source. People who throw water bottles or soda bottles into the river or ocean are to blame but so are big companies who do so. Then there is the exhaust from boats, tankers, and ships which are on the oceans. They pollute a lot of the waterways and are sometimes not regulated at all so they are allowed to be irresponsible. Regulating them would be very helpful as would the elimination of plastics all together. One reason behind all the pollution is greed.

Comapnies want to make more money and want to spend less. Another reason behind it all is laziness. People are businesses are to lazy to do anything to prevent the pollution like putting their waste where it should go rather than into the ocean or the rivers that flow to the ocean. And, another reason is ignorance. People and businesses just don't realize the magnitude of the problem.

Oceans are polluted directly by humans throwing their unwanted items and waste into it, or oil tankers and ships accidentally losing their liquid load of oil, or other perhaps toxic materials.

The material lying at the base of the ocean may not be initially harmful, say discarded items in boxes or tins, but over time can become increasingly toxic as well as disturbing the habititat of marine life.
