Eating food outside of the normal palette of one’s locale is one of the easier ways of immersing oneself in a culture other than one’s own. Some foods that are particularly unusual involve the following. Lardo is an Italian dish consisting of cured pig fat, served with pickles, bread, and pasta. It is better than it sounds. Another dish is Goji berries that can be eaten out the container. Another example are razor clams.

Truffles and Kimchi are also recommended. Insects and other arthropods are also a good experience. Many cultures eat grasshoppers. Some of the more adventurous eaters have eaten soil, sprinkling it in with other foods.

Another item which is eaten is tongue, considered a delicacy in many places. Other interesting meals are meals consisting of squid, octopus, and jellyfish and other forms of seafood. Wagyu beef is a beef produced in Japan from cows with a nutritious diet. It is expensive but it is supposed to be very good.

Although it is commonly believed that street food is less safe than restaurant food, recent research suggests that street food is just as safe if not safer than restaurant food. The reason for this might be because in many U.S. cities, all food truck workers need to have a health department license to handle food whereas in restaurants only one employee per shift is required in many cases.

The location of a food truck also does not appear to have an impact on the safety of street food, but what does appear to be regular inspections. As a result, there is no difference between eating street food and restaurant food in many cases.

When traveling outside the United States, however, some suggestions for being safe with street food include to go to popular vendors since they are clearly pleasing their customers and not giving them food poisoning, going to vendors in an open kitchen where you can see how and how long ago the food was prepared, and being wary of both the cooking utensils and the utensils used for eating.
