The brain is encased in a skull which has many holes. The nose, or nasal cavity, goes almost all the way to the actual brain but is connected by a thin covering called the olfactory bulb which denotes many of the signals that are sent from what is smelled and what the brain decides to do with that information.

There are many other things in the brain and in the nose and they all connect or work together. Many don't realize how closely related the brain and the nose really are. Scents are a very important part of many things you think or remember and are an important part of taste as well. You might say the nose and the brain are directly connected because all the areas work together synergistically. They are a huge part of what makes you who you are.
