Charles Dickens was a social writer, who shared his stories through historical fiction, and literature. There is more than one genre that his works can fit into. When it comes to the categories that we use today, they are much different than what would have been around in Victorian England. At the time that Dickens was publishing, his works would have fallen into literature and could have been labeled social literature.

As many of his works deal with the social injustices of the lower classes, as well as some of the upheavals in the justice system, there would have been quite a different take on what we see. Today, we classify them as historical fiction, classics, and literature. To try and fit the works of Dickens into one category would be wrong. His works have covered so many different topics and can capture the imagination of young readers as well as those who are advanced in their literature.
