An element is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atoms. There are 118 elements (92 naturally occurring elements while the rest have been created in a lab or theorized) that are found in the periodic table. An element can be determined by the number of protons found inside the nucleus of an atom. And the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is also known as the atomic number of any element.
