Yes, the high speed bullet trains have drivers. But all of these trains run well on an auto pilot feature that is quite efficient. It has the capability of reducing speeds according to conditions and increasing speeds as the situation would allow. Although the automatic feature is well functioning, a driver is still needed in case of an emergency. The ability of a live individual to make important decisions is still of value. The Japanese make sure there is a competent driver for each train.

There was a well publicized incident when a driver of a bullet train capable of speeds over 175 kms was photographed with his leg up while the train was running. This caused an outcry in the public. This incident prompted the Japanese railway to have one of their officials apologize publicly on behalf of the driver and the railways too. This incedent clearly presents the need and the value of having a driver for the bullet trains.

People might think that bullet trains do not have drivers anymore because they are so advanced but there are still drivers that are present. There are fully automated controls so they do not have to do so much but they will still check if the controls are working accordingly. The drivers are meant to make sure that everything is working well for the safety of the passengers who are riding the bullet train.

There will be instances when there are some actions that the driver is required to do especially if the bullet train malfunctions while it is being driven. There are more companies now who are trying their best to make their bullet trains more fool-proof.

Yes bullet trains have drivers; most bullet trains are fully automated. Other than pressing few buttons to set the autopilot system in motion, drivers are still required to stand by in the cab to monitor operations, intervene and override the system and take control in case of an emergency or a system malfunction.

However, railway companies are working to run trains with only a conductor on board to manage emergencies, and later the only crew on board will be those serving refreshments. Bullet train have been part of the transportation system for many years, they are well equipped with the automatic control system that manage speed and distance but still have drivers on board.
