Protons are made from tiny particles called quark, same as neutrons. The atom is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three were thought to be fundamental particles that cannot be broken down in smaller particles.

A particle accelerator was invented and used to experiment with the three substances. It was discovered that only the electron is a fundamental particle, but both protons and neutrons are not. Protons and neutrons are made up of quarks and are held together by gluons.

There exist six types of quarks which are referred to as flavors. The flavors can be up, down, top, bottom, charm, or strange. Each of these quarks has an equivalent antiquark which is opposite in charge to that of the quark. The only flavors found in the atoms of normal matter are up and down quarks. A proton is made from 2 up quarks and one down, while a neutron is made from 2 down quarks and one up.
