Bulletproof vests are commonly made with silicon carbide because of affordability in terms of price, the similarity in the density, and its hardness to boron carbide. This compound actually helps to protect against some large projectiles. Silicon carbide, also known as carborundum, is a very hard material that comprises of silicon and carbon. Although several other ceramics are used in the making bulletproofs, these few reasons make silicon carbide to be more in use.

Silicon carbide ceramics remain in their high strength in a very high temperature of about 1600oC with almost no grain boundary impurities without losing strength. Silicon carbide is also known to possess high thermal conductivity, resistance to a chemical reaction, low thermal expansion, high-temperature strength, and being able to act as a semiconductor. Also considering the fact that this compound has less risk to human health, it is also readily available, these make bulletproof to be made more with silicon carbide.

Therefore, by using lightweight materials that are durable and proven to work, then its a winner. Silicon Carbide or SiC is considered to be among the top elements. It has been determined to stop bullets, as well as being lightweight. It is a very tough material. It is molded into a lightweight ceramic material and has been proven effective against the current and many of the upcoming ballistic projectiles.
