Sure, the food offered on flights is tasty. A good meal being offered increases the reputation of the airway industries. The factual part of the matter is that the taste of food reduces in the airplane. This is due to the altitude at which the plane might have attained in the atmosphere. It has been proven that higher altitudes reduce the taste of food to some extent. Another factor for the reduction in the taste of food is that there is an increase in pressure when the plane lifts higher to the sky.

These factors have their way of affecting the tasting and even smelling the sense of humans and reducing their effectiveness by about 30%. Whenever the airplane is also moving, its engine produces noise, which also has its effect on the human system. This noise has its way of reducing the effectiveness of taste bud -the taste of saltiness and sweetness specifically.

In most cases, the food offered on flights is bland. Food is prepared before your flight takes off ass it would be challenging to prepare meals due to the air pressure when the aircraft is thousands of feet above sea level.

It is also believed that at about 30,000 feet above sea level, your taste buds and your sense of smell are greatly affected. Your perception of sweetness and saltiness drops when you are in a pressurized cabin.

The dry air and the low pressure cause a decrease in insensitive of your taste buds up to 30%.

Also, the way the meals are prepared and stored affects the taste. Before take-off, pre-made meals are stored and thaw when in air. Before the meals are served, they are preheated in less than ideal conditions, and this also contributes to the not so great taste of the meals.

In my personal experience while flying, the food that the airlines offered was... well, let's just say it's not a gourmet meal. Granted, there are factors that help determine the taste of the food which the airline serves. Some of which include the way the food is prepared, the environment in which the food is stored, and the flight conditions on-board in which the food is served. Many airlines prepare meals before the flight takes off, freeze them, and then thaw them out during the flight.

Another thing to take into consideration is the air pressure during the flight. While most planes cruise at an altitude of 40,000 feet, the air pressure inside the cabins is around 4,000 - 6,000 feet above sea level, which makes preparing meals on-board very difficult. The conditions of which the food is heated up are less than ideal, which also heavily contributes to the food not tasting great.
