The Red Cross has specific criteria that are followed for blood donations, and because of patient protection, they must be followed to the letter. Some people have chronic Hepatitis B, which lasts for a long time, effects the liver, and must be accompanied by a physician. If Hep B is constant, then your blood donation would be deferred permanently.

There is also acute Hep B which is treatable and less than 10% of the healthy people progress to chronic Hep B; however, according to blood donation guidelines, if you have ever tested positive for hepatitis B of any kind, you may not contribute blood.
