The New Year has been celebrated on January 1 since the 46 B.C. According to the Julian calendar which was formulated by Emperor Julius Caesar.

Romulus created the early Rome calendar in the eight century B.C. The addition of Januarius and Februarius by Numa Pompilius caused the calendar to fall out of sync with the sun.

Emperor Julius Caesar with the help of some competent astronomers and mathematician created the Julian calendar which is in sync with the sun and has close accuracy with the Gregorian calendar.

January 1 was picked as the New Year day in order to honor Janus the god of beginning, who can see the future and past because of his two faces.

However, Christians celebrate New Year in order to thank God for the previous year. Pope Gregory XIII established 1 January as New Year in 1582.

The first New Year to be celebrated will be dated back to Mesopotamia around 2000 B.B. It was first celebrated during the vernal equinox in mid- March.

It was considered the New Year day because of the calendar. It was reported that the ancient Mesopotamia people perform rituals and celebrate the victory of the sky god Marduk over the sea goddess Tiamat. During the celebration, they either crown a new king or allow the old king to continue his reign.

Since then, the New Year has been celebrated in January, and it has been reported that it was in honor of the god Janus from whom the month January was named because he had two faces, which helps him to see the past and into the future.

In the United States, 1870 was the year that federal holidays became law. Jan 1st was the earliest in the year. Other countries were later. It only became a bank holiday in the United Kingdom in 1973 after it was pointed out that employees tended not to turn up that day or were inefficient because they were hung over.

New Year's Day is the beginning of the New Year in the Gregorian calendar. Many countries mark the day with unique customs and traditions. London holds one of the most popular fireworks events in the world on New Year's Eve.
