Kidney disease is mainly classified into 2 types. It is broadly divided into acute kidney disease and chronic kidney disease.

Acute kidney disease refers to a sudden damage to the kidneys. It is mostly a short term condition but it can progress to chronic kidney disease. The most common cause of acute kidney diseases are damage to the kidney architecture by drugs, infection or radioactive dye; obstruction of urine flow (enlarge prostate or a kidney stone).

Chronic kidney disease refers to the gradual progress of damage to the kidney which ultimately lead to end stage kidney disease. Common causes are; hypertension, diabetes, polycystic disease, reflux nephropathy, glomerulonephritis (immune system attacking the kidney), congenital abnormalities of the kidney or urinary tract.
