Periodontology is the study of the specialized system of hard and soft tissues that support our teeth and maintain the position of our jaw. It is a speciality of dentistry. It also focuses on the study of diseases and conditions that affect the teeth and the jaw.

The supporting tissues of the jaw and teeth are collectively known as peridontium; they include; alveolar bone, cementum, gingiva (gums) and the periodontal ligament. People that study periodontology are individuals that already have a dental degree. An individual who practices this speciality is called a periodontist.
