Herbert White’s attitude about the monkey’s paw seems to be that he can’t wait to try it. The first thing that happens after they get the paw, and I’ll say it now SPOILER ALERT, is that they start thinking of things to wish for. Granted, they don’t make a wish quite so soon after they get the paw, but they start thinking about what they could wish for.

From there, they do start wishing the next day. The first wish is for the last two hundred pounds they need for the housing payments. The second and third wishes, well, I’ll leave those for the reader to find out. However, the whole story is a cautionary tale to be careful what you wish for.

I believe that the correct answer is that he does not think it will work since he makes jokes and is being sarcastic the next morning.
