There is a quarter of the universe that is known to contain dark matter. This type of matter is hard to detect because it cannot be seen but you will know that it is there. How? This is through the gravitational pull that it has. It will pull all of the matter that is around it and some say that it would be the process to oblivion. Some feel that dark matter and dark energy are the same but they have some differences.

Dark energy, on the other hand, pushes away items from it. It will have a repelling force over other types of matter. They are important because they keep all of the galaxies together. If they would be removed, the galaxies would cease to exist.
