High wall mining is a form of surface mining that evolved from auger mining. A hydraulic Push beam Transfer Mechanism (PTM) is propelled by a continuous miner into an entry adjacent to the coal steam. It is carried out by remote control at the surface where an operator located in a cabin uses television camera to monitor and control the progress made by the continuous miner machine.
