Surface mining is a method of extracting minerals from the surface of the earth. It involves the removal of soil and rocks covering the mineral deposits. It is use to mine minerals close to the earth. The mineral deposits are removed through shafts or tunnels.

There are 4 forms of surface mining. There are
1. Open - pit mining
2. Strip mining
3. High wall mining
4. Mountain top removal.
