Agricultural engineering offers good opportunities but is a small occupation. Engineers trained in other fields, such as civil or mechanical engineering, also may compete for these jobs. Graduates of biological and agricultural and engineering programs may have some advantage when applying for agrarian engineering jobs. They create new and improved farming equipment that may work more efficiently.

Farmers often work directly with the farming of crops or raising livestock, as well as managing the business and financial operations. Agricultural engineers earn an estimated annual salary of $75,090. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that there are just 2,700 people employed as agricultural engineers. The job outlook for this occupation is sometimes poor.
