Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 having been confined to a wheelchair for his last few years, and his death was from a stroke. There seems little doubt of this, his last known photograph showing a very frail man being pushed along a promenade by his wife, Oona. Any 'scandal' comes from the rather stupid attempt at gaining a huge sum by stealing his coffin from his grave and demanding a ransom.

Oona sensibly refused, weathered the threats to her children, and used the Swiss police who captured the thieves. The reason Chaplin was in Switzerland was that he made it his home for 25 years, the US hounding him under the McCarthy regime because of his supposed communist leanings.
