Africans were on hand, used to the climate and easy to exploit. The traders saw that much money could be made from roundig them up and selling them as cheap labour to landowners who needed agricultural help, especially for back-breaking work in the fields and forests so that crops could be grown more and more extensively. this produce could then be sold for vast profits.
