The Three Mountains of Dewa in Japan are Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono. They are considered to be one of the holiest places associated with the 1400-year old history of the Shugendo religion. A tourist’s guide advises you visit Mount Haguro first. The altitude at Mount Haguro is 414 meters (1358 feet). “Here you pray for happiness your present life” and “make wishes for (your) earthly lives”.

Next is Mt. Gassan, the highest elevation of the Three Mountains of Dewa. It stands 1984 meters (6,509 feet) and it symbolizes the afterlife. The last of the three mountains is Mt. Yodono. Its elevation is 1504 meters (4934 feet) and it is known as a place of regeneration.
